On November 8, I was one of about 500 people to attend a conference in Minneapolis titled, “The Works of God: God’s Good Design in Disability.” Desiring God held the conference (thanks to John Knight). The first speaker, a well-known pastor and author, was outstanding. What he said was powerful and significant and worthy of many listens. We enjoyed the power and kindness of God through his message.

Then a young lady named Krista Horning stood before us and shared a testimony (video below). Krista was born with Apert Syndrome and has endured over 60 surgeries. As she spoke, tears, thousands of them, began falling all over the room. I contributed to the flood! In those ten minutes Krista talked, the power of God was displayed not in a polished, world-renowned preacher, but in a young lady with multiple disabilities who was meticulously created by a sovereign and good God Who loves to display His power through broken vessels. She is a trophy of God’s grace. Here’s how she ended her story:

For now I live with disability.
Disability still says ugly things to me.
Disability is a part of this broken, sin-filled world.

But God has so many beautiful things to say.
And so I’m filled with hope.
God’s words grow louder and louder in my life.
The glory of his grace and mercy grow stronger and stronger.

I need to listen to his words.
I want to listen to his words.

God’s words change everything.
God’s beautiful words have changed my life.
And that is how I live with disability.

Here are a couple of articles I have written recently:

“Wearing Your Own Jersey and Being Unlike Mike in the Body of Christ”

“Time Lapse: The Delay Between Speaking and Obeying the Gospel”

Three guys on a KC sports radio station today joyously reminisced about a well-known local man who died not too long ago and who “lived Chiefs football 365 days a year.”

How sad. It made me think of Jesus’ words:

“If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it. For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? For what can a man give in return for his life? For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels” (Mark 8:34-38).

"Hi, I'm mowing the lawn just like Daddy."

"Sometimes Daddy's lawnmower breaks down. This is what he does."

Reviews:

Sickness has resulted in my kids basically living in their sleepers for the past few days. Lilly wanted to wear her dress shoes yesterday. She did, and here’s what that looked like:
